  • [Plastic]

    Scenario 1:
Would you like a bag with your purchase today?

    Scenario 2:
/salesperson just ignores me and doesn’t offer a bag until I ask for one

I don’t really know where this really affects, other than Toronto, but most retailers now are charging 5 cents generally for a plastic bag, when before it used to be a given (and hence free).

There was a big hubub in the newspaper a long while back on how people thought it was a good/bad/stupid/smart/green idea.

Good – that plastic bags cause alot of garbage waste that doesn’t decompose(or extremely slowly atleast), and this would reduce usage

Bad - its kinda like saying “Yes i want to ruin the environment” , or “I’m too cheap to buy a 5c bag”; bags are also reused (i imagine) at home by most people

Stupid – people will continue to keep using plastic bags even if you restrict them, or they’ll go to a retailer that gives it for free.. etc etc

Smart - it’ll get us to start re-using our own bags, and stop buying plastic

    Green - obvious :P

    I personally love it.
    Love it. Love it.
It may be a bit inconvenient at times but its kinda ghetto-cool to be able to walk around with your purchases in your hands instead of plastic bags.
Or now using re-usable bags is now fashionable (business idea!).
Not so good for the plastic bag industry who are laying their workers off and closing plants.. but hopefully this will create a market for those that can make re-useable bags instead.

  • It’s SO weird. Some places don’t charge us for bags at all.
The Shopper’s near my house does not charge for bags, whereas other SDM’s do. I think they should be consistent if they were to put in this ‘rule’.
    Sometimes I’ll forget.
Like this one time, I was shopping at No Frills or something.
And I bought a bunch of frozen Michelina entree’s and I had to shove like 6 of them into my LV bag. lol. It was ridiculous.

  • BTW, I re-usable bags are good, but I heard despite being bio-degradable and what not, they can build up bacteria from multiple uses =S
